ABOUT

This year's Brunch With Industry has turned virtual, join us for our new online event, Breakfast in bed! Breakfast in Bed is a blog featuring women in various STEM industries who will give students an introduction and inside look into their respective professions. Each speaker will post on the blog and students will be able to ask questions in the comment section. This event aims to allow students to get a real idea of how industry professions deal with challenge and change. We've also included a few students in WiSE who write about their own experience in the industry to help you learn where to start. The blog will launch on November 2nd, 2020 and will run throughout the week!

A special thanks to all the amazing women who contributed to BWI 2020.

Gloria Kodra

My name is Gloria and I am one of the Events Directors for WiSE this year! I am in my 4th year of Civil Engineering & Certificate in Business at Queen's and have worked in STEM-related internships to complement my degree. In the summer of 2019, I had the opportunity to work at Scotiabank in Downtown Toronto as a Summer Analyst through the Women in Capital Markets STEM Internship Program. In this role, I performed financial analysis of companies in the real estate, mining & power sectors using engineering reports and data. This position allowed me to apply technical skills from my engineering degree along with refining my business acumen. Scotiabank is a strong advocate for providing opportunities for women in STEM in the finance industry - out of the 7 co-op students in my department, 5 of us were studying engineering or science! My advice to students in STEM looking for ways to get involved in the industry is to keep your options open beyond traditional fields, network with professionals, and have faith in the hiring process. I had some chats with co-workers over the summer with degrees ranging from math, engineering, life science, and computer science who were all eager to share their career development journeys. While I have plans to pursue engineering consulting following graduation, I am grateful for the opportunity I had to learn from professionals at Scotiabank and am confident that my work experience in finance will serve me well in my career!
